GEO and AEO: A Plain-English Guide to AI Search Optimisation

How AI assistants actually choose what to cite, and the practical work that makes your business the answer they give — no hype, no secrets.

What Is AI Search Optimisation?

AI search optimisation is the practice of being retrieved, mentioned and cited by AI systems when a user asks a question — instead of only competing for a position in a list of links. Two acronyms dominate the conversation. Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) focuses on generative AI — ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity — which synthesise an answer and cite their sources. Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the broader, slightly older idea of structuring content so any answer engine can extract a correct, direct answer — including AI Overviews and voice results.

The distinction matters because AI changes what “wins” means. In classic SEO, position one on page one is the goal. In AI search, the goal is to be inside the small set of sources a model reads when it answers — and to be quoted when it does.

How AI Decides What to Cite

When you ask an AI assistant a buying question, it does not crawl and rank the whole web like a search engine. It retrieves a handful of relevant passages, synthesises an answer, and increasingly attributes what it used. Four things influence whether your content makes that retrieved set.

Clarity of entity. Models resolve businesses and concepts as entities. If your name, category, services and location are stated consistently — on your site, Google Business Profile and credible directories — the model is more confident you are the business it is looking for. If those facts conflict, you are ambiguous and get skipped.

Answer proximity. AI is best at lifting passages that directly answer a question in a short, self-contained span. A paragraph that opens with the answer, followed by supporting detail, is far more quotable than an essay that buries the answer 800 words in.

Corroboration. AI is cautious. It leans toward sources it can attribute and corroborate — independent coverage, credible directories, expert authorship, original data. A strong on-site page with no third-party signal is less likely to be cited than a moderately good page backed by credible mentions.

Machine readability. Clean semantic HTML, accurate structured data and a fast, uncluttered page make it easier for a retrieval system to parse your content correctly.

Does AI Search Optimisation Replace SEO?

No — it complements it, and most of the work is shared. The pages most likely to be cited by AI are almost by definition the pages that perform well in organic search: relevant, fast, credible, well-structured and genuinely useful. Schema, internal linking, clear headings, fast Core Web Vitals and authoritative content help both audiences at once.

The genuinely additional work for AI search is entity clarity (making sure models resolve your business correctly) and answer formatting (restructuring content so it contains short, direct, quotable answers). That is a real but modest layer on top of a solid SEO foundation — not a replacement for it.

Does AI Search Send Traffic to Your Website?

It does, but differently to classic search. AI answers often summarise rather than show a ranked list, so click-through on some queries is lower — but the clicks that do happen are higher intent, because the user has already been pre-qualified by the answer. Being cited also functions as a powerful trust signal: an AI assistant naming your business is effectively an AI-era word-of-mouth recommendation.

This is why we measure AI visibility alongside ordinary rankings and leads rather than in isolation — the goal is not “be mentioned” in the abstract, it is “be cited in the answers your buyers ask, and turn that into enquiries.”

Common Questions

AI Search Optimisation Guide — FAQ

What does GEO stand for?

Generative Engine Optimisation — optimising so generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot retrieve, mention and cite your brand when answering relevant questions.

Is GEO the same as AEO?

They overlap. AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is about structuring content so any answer engine can extract a direct answer — including AI Overviews and voice. GEO is the generative-AI-specific layer, focused on being retrieved and cited by models that synthesise answers. Most of the underlying optimisation is shared.

How do I get my business cited by ChatGPT?

Focus on making your business unambiguous to machines: consistent entity facts across your site and trusted directories, clean structured data, and content that gives short, direct, well-sourced answers to the questions your buyers ask. Credible third-party mentions help most, because AI leans on corroboration.

Will AI search hurt my website traffic?

On some informational queries, click-through may fall because AI summarises instead of showing a list. On commercial queries, the clicks that remain are typically higher intent. Overall this is still an additive channel — and being cited acts as a strong trust signal — but it is worth tracking AI visibility alongside classic rankings rather than assuming one replaces the other.

Does AI search optimisation replace traditional SEO?

No. The pages most likely to be cited by AI are also the pages that rank best in classic SEO. AI search adds a new retrieval surface on top of organic search, and most of the optimisation is shared — only entity clarity and answer formatting are genuinely additional.

How long until AI visibility improves?

Entity and schema fixes can change how AI describes your business within weeks, because they change what a model can resolve about you immediately. Competitive citation gains take longer — typically a few months — because they depend on building credible third-party corroboration and authoritative content.
