The App Development Process, Stage by Stage

What actually happens between “we’re building your app” and the App Store listing — with the cost and timeline of each stage, in plain English.

Why the Process Matters More Than the Tech

Most failed apps fail on process, not code. The app development process exists to surface the hard questions — who is this for, what do they do first, what does success look like — before anyone opens an IDE. A team that rushes discovery will build the wrong product quickly, which is the most expensive outcome available.

The Five Stages

  • Discovery and validation — problem, audience, success metric, scope boundaries.
  • UX and UI design — user flows, wireframes, then visual design and prototype.
  • Development — build in two-week increments with a working build at every sprint.
  • Testing — device matrix, store guidelines, load and security checks.
  • Launch and iterate — store submission, analytics, then the improvement loop.

What Each Stage Costs and Takes

In Australia, discovery and a clickable prototype typically run 1–2 weeks; a focused MVP (one platform, core flows) usually lands at 8–12 weeks. Adding a second platform, accounts, payments or a backend roughly doubles scope — which is why we build one platform properly before shipping the second.

The stages that get skipped — testing and post-launch iteration — are the ones that determine whether the app survives its first ninety days.

How Mobile App Development Stages Differ on Android

iOS and Android share code but not economics: review is slower and stricter on the App Store, device fragmentation is worse on Android, and release cycles differ. We ship iOS first for most Australian consumer apps when the audience skews that way, then Android — not because one is better, but because it gets the app in front of users sooner.

On-Page Checklist

Before You Start, Know These Answers

If you cannot answer these, discovery exists to answer them.

  • Who exactly is the user, and what job are they hiring the app to do?
  • What is the single most important action in the app?
  • What does success look like in numbers at 90 days?
  • Which platform first, and why?
  • Who will maintain it after launch?
  • What is the real budget range, including year two?
Common Questions

App Development Process — FAQ

How long does the app development process take?

A focused single-platform MVP typically takes 8–12 weeks in Australia; enterprise apps with accounts, payments and backends run 4–8 months.

What is an app development procedure I can follow as a founder?

Validate the problem, design the smallest complete flow, build one platform first, test on real devices, and instrument from day one. Everything else is refinement on that loop.

Do I need a prototype before building?

For anything beyond a simple internal tool, yes — a clickable prototype catches wrong assumptions for a fraction of build cost.

Can you take over an app built by another agency?

Yes — we start with a technical audit of the codebase, store presence and analytics, then give you an honest view of what is worth keeping.
